What are the requirements to become a Correctional Officer?

Be at least 19 years of age.

Be a citizen of the United States

Be a high school graduate or equivalent

Not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.  Any person who, after July 1, 1981, pleads guilty or nolo contendere to, or is found guilty of a felony, or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement, shall not be eligible for employment or appointment as an officer, not withstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.

Never have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

Have been fingerprinted by the employing agency with prints processed by the FDLE and the FBI.

Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician.

Have a good moral character.

Completed an Affidavit of Applicant from CJSTC-68

Successfully passed a background investigation, to include drug testing.

Successfully completed the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program for the respective discipline, or equivalent.

Achieve a passing score on the State Officer Certification Examination (Except for Auxiliary Officer Certification Examination)

Complied with mandatory retraining for continuing training or education requirements.

Have a valid FL driver’s license prior to employment.

Where can I find Job Vacancy Postings?

Advertisements for job vacancies will be posted as follows:

1.                  In-house

2.                  Sunday edition of the Jackson County Floridan

3.                  Front counter of the HR Department

4.                  City and Library bulletin boards

5.                  Florida Job Service

 

 

 

How long does the Personnel Office hold applications active?

Correctional Officer applications will remain active for one year from interview date.

All other applicants must submit a new county employment application for each position advertised. 

Applications will not remain active once the job vacancy is filled.

When can I expect a salary increase?

Normally the first pay period in October.  Salary increases must be Board approved.

 

 

When is Open Enrollment Month?

From September 1st  through the 30th  you may add or delete Health or Dental insurance coverage for yourself or your dependents.  You may also elect to participate in the ‘Cafeteria Plan.’

Personal Leave Day

Employees hired on or before October 1st will earn one Personal Leave Day.  This day must be used before the end of the fiscal year.  The PLD is granted to each active employee every October 1st.  You cannot accumulate a PLD.  “Use it or Lose it.”

 

Annual Leave

You may accrue up to 280 hours of Annual Leave.  Please keep track of your hours.  You may not exceed 280 hours.  Any amount of hours over this limit must be used before the end of each quarter.  This policy is not dictated by the HR department --- please refer to your employee manual.

 

 

Open Enrollment

From September 1st through the 30th every year.  Changes will be effective October 1st.  If adding family coverage please be sure to take into consideration your premiums are due on October 1st,  and must be either deducted from the two September payrolls or a check must be presented to FINANCE on or before October 1st.
